Many men and women will tell you that travelling by motorcycle is both a fun and comfortable way to go. With the rising costs in gas and the failing economics, many people have decided to switch from clunky cars to sleek motorcycles. Motorcycles also provide a versatility and speed most cars do not. There are several different kinds of motorcycles. The type of motorcycle you get should be designed for the purpose you are intending. Here are some of the more common types of motorcycles and their features.

Cruiser

The cruiser is a popular style in the United States. This style of motorcycle came about in the 1930s and continued with its dominance into the 1960s. Cruisers are still a common type of motorcycle being manufactured today. Cruiser motorcycles share a unique feature in that they force the hands and feet to be up while the spine is kept straight. This position is more comfortable during long rides, particularly cross country.

Road Bikes

A common style of motorcycle, particularly in developing countries such as Pakistan and India, the road bike is designed to be driven on paved roads. In Southeast Asia, road bikes are often converted into three wheeled tricycles.

Touring Bikes

Touring motorcycles are designed primarily for prolonged travel. These are often on the higher end of bikes with creature comforts including most commonly side and rear luggage. Several touring motorcycles also provide features such as heating, air conditioning, stereo systems, and more.

Street Bikes

Another name for street bike motorcycles is “naked” bikes. These are a standard form of motorcycle. The bike has been stripped down to its bare essentials. This type of motorcycle first came to popularity in the 1970s although that popularity faltered during the 80s. Sometime in the 1990s, the street bike motorcycle came back and appears to be here to stay.

Scooters

Some might say that scooters are completely different and shouldn’t be classified as a type of motorcycle. The scooter is a small style motorcycle with smaller wheels and “cute” designs. Scooters can be just as powerful as many of the motorcycles out there today.

Find the style of motorcycle that best suits your needs and personality, and you can be sure you’ll be satisfied.

Triumph motorcycles started in 1883 when Siefried Bettmann started a new company. The journey has been long and arduous, but Triumph motorcycles remains.

In 1889, Triumph was distributing bicycles. This was before they went on to develop motorcycles. Triumph’s motorcycle production began in 1902, utilizing a Belgian-made engine. Triumph motorcycles were then produced mainly in Germany. Not known for its innovations in the field of design or development, Triumph motorcycles mainly copied the basic designs of other motorcycle manufacturers.

Triumph’s first big break came about during the First World War. The company was commissioned to supply motorcycles which became known as the ‘Trusty Triumph’ to the Allied forced. During this time of war, some 30,000 units of this roadster model were supplied by Triumph.

Triumph motorcycles were known to be some of the best in the United Kingdom during the 1920s. The post-World War Two marketplace saw the introduction of Triumph motorcycles into the US. During that time, one of the most popular motorcycles was the Thunderbird, a motorcycle intended for long-distance travel.

A very popular movie “The Wild One” which starred Marlon Brando helped influence the sale of Triumph’s Thunderbird when he rode one during the movie.

Nearing the end of the 1960s, Triumph showed signs of difficulty in keeping up with the demanding fast paced American motorcycle market. Prior to this Triumph held about one half the share of the US motorcycle market share. Difficulty in keeping up with the radically different technological advances being made by its competitors, Triumph motorcycles were now trying to keep up rather than leading the pack. Triumph motorcycles were now focused on the export of their bikes, which allowed the market in its homeland be more easily infiltrated by foreign competitors.

Triumph closed its doors in 1983. Twelve years later, in 1995, Triumph returned to the American market, delivering motorcycles once more. The struggle Triumph had gone through seems finally to be paying off.

The Scrambler 900 is one of the most popular Triumph motorcycles in production. A combination of its sleek design and functionality has allowed it to gain a respectable share of the motorcycle market. The motorcycle is suitable both for commuting and travel within the city.

Suzuki Motors started out with its first mass produced electronic bicycle in 1952. Since then, the company has led the motorcycle market in terms of innovation and features.

Michio Suzuki founded the company in 1909, trying fulfill his long life dream of producing quality automobiles. It took Suzuki more than 40 years to be able to produce the first of its two-wheeled automobiles. Once they had reached this impressive milestone, though, Suzuki never looked back. Suzuki quickly took the lead in producing 2-stroke motorcycles. In an effort to shift toward more efficient technology, Suzuki became a leader in manufacturing 4-stroke motorcycles around the world.

Some of the best known motorcycles in the world are Suzuki motorcycles. They are very well known in the professional circuit. During the 1970s, Suzuki motorcycles grabbed several world championships including the 500cc Road Racing and 500 cc Motocross titles. Suzuki motorcycles also serve as a popular mode of transportation in developing countries, namely Southeast Asia.

Suzuki produces several models of motorcycles for all sorts of different riders. Suzuki released many models in 2006 including 11 sport bike models, 12 cruiser models, 2 tourng models and 6 dual-sport and standard models as well as 4 scooters.

The versatility of motorcycle models offered by Suzuki is one of the reasons the company has become one of the top motorcycle brands in the United States and the rest of the world. In North Carolina, Suzuki is currently the number 4 motorcycle producer in terms of market share. Harley Davidson, Yamaha, and Kawasaki place just before Suzuki.

Suzuki first entered into the North American market in 1963. One of its key factors to success and survival is the value to price ratio. Suzuki is known for producing inexpensive motorcycles that can perform at the same level and provide the same quality as other, more expensive motorcycle brands.

If you haven’t settled on a brand of motorcycle for you yet, you may want to investigate Suzuki further. Of course you want to shop around and be sure you’re getting the best price on your new motorcycle, but from a strictly practical point of view Suzuki motorcycles are one of the best models out there. A Suzuki motorcycle provide top value for the price. On top of price, Suzuki offers innovative and straightforward motorcycles for a wide arena of riders. See http://www.suzuki.co.nz/motorcycle/

There sometimes comes a time when you have to let go of some of your favorite things. You may want to sell your motorcycle, because times are hard and you need the extra money. Maybe you’re getting a new motorcycle and can’t afford the upkeep on two. Where do you start, though? How do you find and communicate with quality buyers? Here are a few useful tips to help you in selling your motorcycle.

Present a Winner

If you are looking at selling your motorcycle, one of the first things you will need to do is get your bike in top shape. A good wash and replacing a few peripherals can greatly increase the value of your motorcycle to potential buyers. Even if the motorcycle has been running well for you, or if you haven’t rode it in a while, have a mechanic take a look and see if there is anything in need of repair or replacement. A bad motorcycle component can ruin a deal for you. Worse off, it can damage your reputation as a seller for future motorcycle deals.

Take Advantage of Your Existing Network

Through work, friends, church, or similar network you are involved with, you might already know someone who is looking to purchase a used motorcycle. Offer to sell the motorcycle to these people first. It can help you avoid the cost of classified adverts or the hassle in dealing with people you don’t know. If you are willing to let the motorcycle go for a lower price to someone you know, make sure you weigh the deal properly. Would it have been worth it to wait for and find a buyer at a higher price? You shouldn’t place yourself at the losing end of any deal.

Online Sales

There are several sites you can use from the Internet to sell your motorcycle. You might opt for an auction site like eBay or a simple listing site. These sites connect to a wide variety of buyers from all different locations and backgrounds. The price for using listing or auction sites are typically less than a classified ad and less of a hassle. If you do look at selling your motorcycle online, be sure to provide high resolution pictures taken from different angles. These pictures of your motorcycle will help entice possible buyers.

Local Newspaper or Trade Mags

The local newspaper or trade magazines can be an invaluable asset. There very well may be someone in your town or nearby just dying to buy the motorcycle you are selling.

Taking long distance trips can always prove to be a pain for motorcycle riders, because of the lack of space for luggage. Bags that cannot be strapped down to their motorcycle must be strapped down instead to the rider. And, you still can’t be sure that your tethers will remain in place once you hit a rough patch of road.

One of the best ways to resolve this issue is to invest in a motorcycle trailer. Most of us are familiar with the trailers attached to cars, trucks, and vans. While a motorcycle could never the support the weight and size of these full size trailers, they can support the same concept in a smaller size.

Loading and Packing Tips for Motorcycle Trailers

Balance is the key to effortless control of motorcycle drivers. Do your best to place your load or baggage on the middle part of the trailer. If this isn’t possible, the front part of the motorcycle trailer should carry the greater weight. Secure the load with straps to ensure that it won’t rock back and forth when the motorcycle starts moving. Unsecured luggage can ultimately affect the driver’s ability to control the motorcycle trailer while traveling which can then lead to an unfortunate accident.

No matter how tempted to do so, never overload your motorcycle trailer. In the worst case, the excessive weight of your motorcycle trailer can cause your motorcycle to overturn and for you to suffer from various and potentially serious injuries.

Tips for Driving with a Motorcycle Trailer

Always make sure that the motorcycle trailer’s door is securely locked.

Always make sure that the motorcycle trailer is securely attached to your motorcycle. Try driving for a few miles and observe whether the motorcycle trailer shows signs of breaking away. Of course, make sure that you’re tying in the motorcycle trailer in such a way that it won’t cause damage to your motorcycle.

Never forget that you’re pulling a motorcycle trailer behind you. Having a motorcycle trailer behind will require you to make slight changes on your driving style. Once you forget that very important fact, you might as well sign away your life.

The market is filled with various types of motorcycle trailers so make sure that you choose one that’s most suitable to your needs. Motorcycle trailers can be pop-ups and foldable and even come with their own screened porch!

If you are looking to make an investment when purchasing a motorcycle, you should take the time to learn about the various factors that can affect the prices of motorcycles.

The motorcycle engine is perhaps the most influential factor when determining a motorcycle’s price. You should concern yourself most with the size, power and type of motorcycle engine. A bigger engine can actually hamper the motorcycle’s speed. A motorcycle with greater power can get the rider more speed, but can also be more dangerous because they are typically harder to control.

Motorcycles are designed with a particular level of rider skill in mind. The higher end motorcycles are typically designed for riders with a higher level of expertise. Those motorcycles designed for novice riders will typically be lower in cost, because there are fewer requirements.

Type – The type of motorcycle you’re buying will also affect the price range that you’ll have to accommodate. There are various types of motorcycles on the market so you need to determine your purposes for buying a motorcycle before making any purchases.

Sports bikes are for speed junkies and look best when accessorized with lots of bling-blings; standard bikes on the other hand ensure that you reach work or home quickly but safely; motocross bikes are specifically designed for users fond of off-road travel; while cruiser bikes are the motorcycle industry’s version of show-type dogs like poodles and other toy dogs as opposed to those belonging to the sports or work classes.

Aesthetics and More – Lastly, the style and design of motorcycles also has an effect on its price. The materials used are just one of them. Expect motorcycle prices go up when additional modifications have been made such as the inclusion of an audio system and security alarms. Motorcycle prices which include insurance charges are naturally more expensive than those without although they may prove more affordable in the long run.

Brand name is definitely a factor since the motorcycle industry has its own hierarchy and in which names like Duchatti and Harley Davidson reign supreme.

Now that you know all the factors affecting motorcycle prices, the only step left to take is determining which factors are most important for you and which motorcycle models are capable of meeting your expectations. Have fun with your big bike!

Other than common sense, two of the biggest assets in insuring your motorcycle safety are wearing the proper attire and attending safety training classes.

Motorcycles have been around for years, and given the current trend, they are only growing in popularity.

A report from the National Highway Traffic Administration shows that from 1975 to 1999, more than 38,000 people have died from motorcycle accidents. The number of people injured while riding a motorcycle is substantially more than that.

If you want to lessen your chances of becoming one of these statistics, wear a helmet. This piece of protective gear should be put on before starting the motorcycle and only removed once the vehicle is parked securely.

Helmets don’t usually come free with your purchase of a motorcycle, so you will need to purchase one separately. It’s is a good idea to try on a few different helmets to find the one that fits you best.

Aside from protective headgear, when riding a motorcycle, you should also wear thick clothing and boots. Studies show that those who have worn such items can escape accidents with little more than scrapes and bruises rather than more serious breaks and gashes.

Many dealers offer courses or at least information on safety training courses for riding a motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle is very different from driving a car, so it is best to be familiar with the differences before going on the open road.

The training program isn’t only in the classroom but it will also have some practical driving. This will teach you to stay out of the blind spot of a motorist, which is one of the more frequent causes of an accident.

Since the motorcycle is much smaller compared to a car, you will also have to look at the side mirrors regularly. This will avoid getting bumped from the back when weaving from one lane to the next when moving through traffic.

The safety-training course will be finished within three to five days. What happens after that will entirely be on the driver.

Men, women, and children the world over love cool looking motorcycle stunts. The word stunt is usually associated with action scenes or dangerous movements made by any person either on stage, on television or movies and even live performances. The common denominator is that a stunt involves risk to the performer or the person doing the stunt.

Some stunts are done by bare hands such as jumping on top of a building while some stunts are done using vehicles or motorcycles. Motorcycle lovers flock to motorcycle shows and exhibitions because of the stunts that the riders do no matter how dangerous.

Motorcycle stunts can be very dangerous, because the rider has only two wheels to support them and they are usually travelling at high rates of speed. Even with protective gear like helmets and padding, there is a chance of being severely injured when attempting a daring motorcycle stunt.

Any stunt for that matter requires prior planning as to the safety of the performer as well as the audience. There are stunts that are done to shock the performers without looking into the possible harm that may be caused to all the people involved in the stunt.

Motorcycle stunts should only be attempted by those with the proper training and experience. Novices when it comes to riding a motorcycle should not be doing stunts that would endanger their safety or the safety of others.

Even experienced stuntmen should ask themselves whether or not doing the stunt is worth the danger posed to them. Some do stunts for enjoyment, others for fame and glory while some do it for money. Others simply do it for the adrenaline.

Every motorcycle stunt should follow a plan or a script which should be implemented to the letter to minimize the risks on the safety of the performer and the audience.

Motorcycle riders should be honest with themselves and evaluate their capabilities. They should be responsible enough to know the risks involved in doing the stunts. Everyone has their own limits and they shouldn’t push themselves too hard to do motorcycle stunts that are beyond their capabilities.

Riders are a wild bunch and they will always go for broke. It may be the excitement that gives them the energy and the resoluteness to do dangerous motorcycle stunts. Whatever the reason is, they should always be ready to face the consequences of such acts.

If you are in the market for a motorcycle, one important consideration is whether or not to buy a motorcycle used. Buying a used motorcycle has several advantages, especially if this is your first time buying a motorcycle.

The initial benefit is, of course, the lower initial investment you would be looking at when buying a used motorcycle. Since there are so many different kinds of motorcycles, buying one second hand could be vital, so you can properly evaluate the type of motorcycle that is best for you without spending too much money upfront.

If you are looking at buying a used motorcycle, consider this helpful advice before venturing out on your own.

Consider Your Needs

If you are indeed looking at buying a motorcycle, have you considered the totality of your needs? Will the motorcycle be one that you use to commute to and from your office or school? Are you looking for a motorcycle that will be used for cross country travel? Are you looking for a recreational vehicle you can ride around your local neighborhood? Different types of motorcycles were designed with different uses in mind. Take the time to know what your needs are.

Be Aware of Your Options

Never rush into buying a motorcycle, even if it seems like a deal you can’t afford to pass up. You can shop for motorcycles at local dealers, in local trade publications, and even online. Auction sites such as TradeMe offer a virtual marketplace with all sorts of offers. Beyond that, you will be able to get a more well rounded view of what is available to you, reviews, and so on.

You might also be an area where there are regularly held auctions where you can find a good deal on a motorcycle.

Take a Mechanic with You

This is particularly important for first time buyers, but anyone can benefit from having someone who knows the ins, outs, and mechanical nuances of motorcycles take a look at a motorcycle they are considering buying. The average person, even armed with knowledge of riding motorcycles, will miss several details that a skilled mechanic will know to look for on a motorcycle.

Don’t Forget the Test Drive

If you have found the right deal on a motorcycle for the right price and your mechanic has said everything checks out, it’s time for a test drive. This is very important, because once you buy the motorcycle, you can’t just give it back.

Motorcycles are fun, versatile, and often economical machines. Many people opt to purchase their new motorcycle used. Take the time to know exactly what you are buying and who you are buying it from. Doing this will enable you to avoid the headaches down the road and enjoy the ride.

Riding on a motorcycle is fun and exciting. Nothing feels better on a warm afternoon then being on one, feeling the light breeze and the sun as you travel. However, it is vital that you take motorcycle safety very seriously as it only takes a second for you to be involved in an accident. Keep in mind that you don’t have the protection of a vehicle around you. Your motorcycle and your body are going to come into direct contact with another vehicle as well as the road.

Most accidents involving motorcycles are the result of another vehicle not being able to see the motorcycle. I can remember one of the scariest moments in my life involved my husband on a motorcycle. He was about a mile ahead of me and I was traveling in my car with our children. My husband went to pass a semi truck. As he was preparing to go around the semi truck decided to pass the car in front of him. He put on his signal light and my husband had to get to the shoulder to avoid being hit. The semi truck driver never knew he was there.

The lesson here is for both the motorcycle rider and for other vehicles. Make sure you look for motorcycles behind you and on the side of you before you make a move. This is especially true during times of warmer weather. Motorcycle riders need to drive attentively, understanding that other vehicle drivers won’t always be able to see them.

Operating a motorcycle doesn’t mean you have any special privileges on the streets or the highways. I think I speak for most of us when I say that we have all seen reckless driving involving motorcycles. I have been passed on the right shoulder more times than I can count. I few times traffic has been at a complete stop when a motorcycle operator decides to weave in and out of traffic to get ahead of the mess.

Motorcycle riders often travel together, and they like to ride side by side. This is a safety hazard for everyone. Each rider needs to remain in single file and pay attention to what is going on around them. This also needs no wheelie tricks or excessive speeds while traveling.

It is very important to always wear eye protection and a helmet when you are riding on a motorcycle. In many states, it is mandatory. It is very easy to get a bug, dust, or other debris in your eye while riding a motorcycle if you don’t have eye protection on. A helmet can save your life as a head injury will be less likely than without one.

It is a good idea to always wear a long sleeved shirt and pants while riding a motorcycle as well. They will offer you protection from road rash and debris. If you ride your motorcycle at night make sure your headlight works properly and that you have on reflective tape or clothing.

Many motorcycle accidents are the result of road conditions. Pay attention to the road and watch for areas of spills, sand, water, or foreign items. We have all seen boards, wood pieces, and even furniture on the road. Can you imagine hitting such an object with a motorcycle? Likewise, watch for such items being hit by another vehicle and becoming airborne. Never ride your motorcycle in rain, sleet, or snow. The risk is too great.

Operating a motorcycle is a great way to spend your leisure time. It is also a very cost effective way of commuting to and from work. Operating a motorcycle is also a responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly. You need to be more assertive and observant of your surroundings on a motorcycle than you do when operating a car. Make sure you have plenty of experience on how your motorcycle functions before you attempt to ride it in a location where there are other vehicles.
